1924. Eckersley joined the BBC in 1923, its chief and only engineer. He went on to become Head of Drama at Granada Television in the 1960s and '70s. Then scandal forced him to quit. The lecture is named after brothers Thomas and Peter Eckersley who attended Bedales in the early 1900s.

The station operated from a hut in a field at Writtle near Chelmsford. The Chief Engineer's job went to Peter Eckersley, a former wireless equipment officer who had been working for Marconi. The station's call sign: "This is Two Emma Toc, Writtle testing, Writtle testing..." broadcast by Captain Peter Eckersley from the hut, became a well known phrase of the day.
