(originally the Drapery and General Importing Company of New Zealand Ltd) was a New Zealand department store chain, founded in Dunedin by Bendix Hallenstein in 1884.. It was bought out by one of its chief rivals, Arthur Barnett, in the 1980s. All signage was replaced to reflect the new owners. Caused a bit of controversy that one. Malls Joan Knudson was among them and said her 16 years working at the store were "brilliant". The Farmers’ Trading Company in Auckland had its genesis as Laidlaw Leeds, a mail-order firm whose customers were largely farmers, and which turned its warehouse building into a department store in 1920. All the department stores had records in the 1960s. Barnett Ltd in 1987 and the DIC Dunedin store finally closed on 31 March 1991.
