The Atlas V is the seventh generation of a rocket family that dates to 1957, with about 200 successful launches in that lineage.

SCORE (Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment) was famously launched by Atlas 10B from Cape Canaveral LC 11 on December 18, 1958. Redstone and Atlas After the creation of a separate Air Force in 1947, the Army had continued rocket development, operating on the same assumption behind the German Army's research in the 1930s - that rocketry was basically an extension of artillery.
Early in the program, Martin's engineers decided to switch to a new liquid-propellant engine for the first stage, the General Electric's X-405, instead of the engines built by Reaction Motors, Inc., for the Viking. LV Family: Atlas. January 1: Strategic Air Command assigned responsibility for U.S. operational ICBM capability; while the 672nd Strategic Missile Squadron, first to be equipped with USAF Douglas Thor IRBM, was activated. Nine of these were sub-orbital test flights of the Atlas as an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, with five successful missions and four failures.

But success would follow. Ten flights were made. Although three of these five flights resulted in failure, enough was learned from them as well as from continued captive test firings of three A and the first B model missiles back in California to proceed with the next round of flights with the Atlas B starting in July 1958.
Wayne Eleazer spent 25 years in the US Air Force, serving as the Thor program manager, GPS integration manager, Atlas test director at Vandenberg Air Force Base, and led the space launch section of the Air Force Acquisition Directorate of the Secretariat in the Pentagon. The failure of the Ariane 501 was caused by the complete loss of guidance and attitude information 37 seconds after start of the main engine ignition sequence (30 seconds after lift- off). For these three tests a Thor core stage was topped by the Able second stage. ...
