While just as sensitive as Hubble's cameras, Roman Space Telescope's 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument will image a sky area 100 times larger. NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope, slated to launch in the mid-2020s, has been named the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, after NASA's first chief astronomer. NASA is proposing to move ahead with a telescope that would spot asteroids on a potential collision course with Earth. The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope is that successor, and NASA just gave it a very fitting name. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has three infrared instruments to help study the origins of the universe and the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets. This means a single Roman Space Telescope image will hold the equivalent detail of 100 pictures from Hubble. SPACE is about to be viewed in a whole new light with the launch of an extraordinarily powerful infrared telescope, Australian National University astronomers have announced.

NASA originally planned to decommission Spitzer a few years ago, but put off its demise as the James Webb Space Telescope, a vastly more elaborate infrared observatory, kept getting delayed. The Spitzer space telescope, a bullet-shaped infrared eye that allowed scientists to peer at the edges of the cosmos for almost 17 years, has been taken offline. Thus, infrared energy can also reveal objects in the universe that cannot be seen in visible light using optical telescopes.
