The U.S. Geological Survey footage shows lava breaking through the crusted mantle of the lava lake on the Big Island. From 2010 until 2018, a lava lake had filled the caldera rather than water.
It is atop Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. That lasted for two weeks, and the lake disappeared for 85 years before returning to the summit. Federal officials have released high-definition video of the lava lake. Kilauea has oozed lava and ash onto Hawaii’s Big Island for a week—and the volcano might be ready for its most violent eruption yet. Kilauea’s frequent eruptions are usually nonexplosive and are contained within Halema‘uma‘u as a boiling lake of active lava, which sometimes rises and overflows along the floor and flanks of the caldera proper. In 1790, however, a paroxysmal steam explosion killed part of a Hawaiian army marching near the caldera. At that time, the crater was about half the diameter of what it is now. It was shot in stunning 4K ultra high definition video. Unlike the brief lava ponds of 2009, this lava pond persisted and enlarged throughout 2010, evolving into a sustained lava lake. From the early 1800s up until 1924, there was a continuous lake of lava at Kilauea summit within Halemaumau. NASA captured images showing before the lava lake in Halema‘uma‘u crater drained, after the caldera floor collapsed, and after the crater floor pooled with water. Lava remained deep in the Overlook crater, and views of the lake from the rim of Halema‘uma‘u were challenging. A caldera is a large crater left behind in a volcano after an eruption. The video provides a rare close-up glimpse of the powerful summit eruption. The lava draining from Halemaumau Crater can be compared to the last time it drained in 1924, and the lava fell below the water table, causing earthquakes, explosions and crater collapses. The lake surface consisted of large crustal plates, with spattering commonly active at the margin.
