Abstract: Women's opportunities for competitive physical activity were limited in America until Federal Legislation, commonly referred to as Title IX, became law. In 1972, only 1 of 27 high school girls played varsity sports. It required American society to recognize a woman's right to participate in sports on a plane equal to that of men. From a plea to a founding father, to the suffragettes to Title IX, to the first female political figures, women have blazed a steady trail towards equality in the United States. Athletes were similarly affected prior to the adoption of Title IX. Title IX and the Amateur Sports Act opened the doors for women to participate in the male-dominated institution of American sports. This report, an evaluation of the history and current uses of Title IX, is the result of a joint effort by a subcommittee that included members of the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure and the Committee on Women in the Academic Profession.
