Fire and Emergency New Zealand is responsible for declaring fire seasons and issuing fire permits in all urban and rural locations in New Zealand.
Fire restrictions have ended in the Whangārei District and much of the Far North — but remain in force across drought-hit Kaipara. No matter what the fire season is, you still need to comply with any council bylaws and regional council requirements relating to smoke nuisance and discharges to the air, even if you are issued with a fire permit from Fire and Emergency. If you see any smoke rising in a rural area while driving around the District, please call 111. All Fire Authorities across Northland have now imposed 'total fire bans' or what is called a 'Prohibited Fire Season' until further notice.
Due to the continued dry weather we are experiencing, all open-air fires are banned in Northland.
Zone 1 of the Far North District and the Kaipara District remain in a TOTAL FIRE BAN as it is still to dry and the fire risk is still too great in... these areas. Kaipara District Council has received the following application for Resource Consent. The Far North Rural Fire District has had a fire ban … This means that you will require a fire permit to light a fire in these areas. The application includes an assessment of environmental effects. If the fire is permitted, the operator may already know and that’s fine; but if not, your call may save some of our valuable forest areas and maybe even someone’s life! If you are currently in a restricted fire status zone you can apply for a permit here .
