Brian Atwater was one of those geologists. Flooded with salty seawater, the trees on that vast stretch of land died. Researchers had long known that many trees in the Pacific Northwest died sometime in the winter of 1699-1700, thanks to a comparison of dead-tree rings with the rings of those still alive. They provide evidence that a great earthquake occurred in January 1700.
