By the 1980s, geologists were wondering whether there had ever been devastating earthquakes Big Ones in the Pacific Northwest.

Indians said they tied their canoes to the top of the trees, and some canoes were torn loose and swept away … After the tidal wave, the Indians told of tree tops filled with limbs and trash and of finding strange canues in the woods.

Northwesterners Respond to the Risk Earthquakes can’t be prevented. The trees had indeed died just before the growing season of 1700. Trees were uprooted and villages were swept away. Study of tree rings in the killed trees show that they grew their final layer of wood during the 1699-1700 season.
Northwesterners Respond to the Risk Earthquakes can’t be prevented.

A Great Detective Story.
Brian Atwater was one of those geologists. Flooded with salty seawater, the trees on that vast stretch of land died. Researchers had long known that many trees in the Pacific Northwest died sometime in the winter of 1699-1700, thanks to a comparison of dead-tree rings with the rings of those still alive. They provide evidence that a great earthquake occurred in January 1700. Avoiding Earthquake Surprises in the Pacific Northwest Scientists study dead trees in a tidal marsh along the Pacific coast of Washington. The forest was killed during rapid subsidence accompanying the most recent Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. Atwater and dendrochronologist David Yamaguchi then looked at when the trees in one of the salt marshes died using growth rings and found that they stopped growing after the summer of 1699, so an earthquake must have happened sometime in late 1699/early 1700 to drop the level of the land, form the salt marsh, and kill the trees. Avoiding Earthquake Surprises in the Pacific Northwest 3 Scientists study dead trees in a tidal marsh along the Pacific coast of Washington. The Indians said the big flood and tidal wave tore up the land and changed the rivers. Tree rings from the dead trees provide evidence that the trees died sometime after the end of the A.D. 1699 growing season and before the beginning of the A.D. 1700 growing season. Like detectives arriving on the scene long after a crime has been committed, geologists look for clues in the landscape in order to understand the past. They provide evidence that a great earthquake occurred in January 1700.
